By Her Side Protect. Empower. Prevent.

Provide safe shelter, healing and resources that women need to rebuild their lives!

In Canada, 44 per cent of women face abuse from an intimate partner in their lifetimes1

Gender-based violence costs us the lives of women and girls every single day.

These women are not just numbers – they are our sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends. They live in our communities, visit the neighborhood parks, study in our schools, and work beside us. Their safety is our shared responsibility.

It is on all of us to be aware, to recognize the signs, and know how to help someone in need – to be by her side.

And to be truly by her side is more than awareness—it’s a promise to stand with her through every challenge, offering real support and a future she can believe in. She needs more than hope; she needs safety, shelter, and the resources to rebuild her life. And she needs you by her side. Together, we can be her safety net, her advocate, her chance to rise.

Your donation can save a life. During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, your gift today provides immediate shelter, essentials, and a pathway to a new beginning for women and girls in crisis. Help us create safe spaces where they can heal and rebuild.

What are the 16 Days of Activism?

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is a campaign that brings together people from all over the world to speak up, start conversations and renew their dedication to eradicate gender-based violence from our communities.

These 16 days start on November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and end on December 10th (International Human Rights Day). In Canada, we also commemorate the École Polytechnique massacre on December 6th as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

When I was 13 years old, a family-friend sexually assaulted me.

He continued to do so for 5 more years until I finally built up the courage to tell my brother. Alhamdulillah, he was supportive and believed me, but things got out of hand when he confronted our uncle. The confrontation got physical to the point where the police were called, and in the end, my worst nightmare came true, my parents did not believe me. They accused us of lying, bringing shame to our family and kicked us out of the house. On top of the trauma of sexual assault, knowing that my parents were not on my side broke my heart.

My brother found a place to stay with his friends, but I couldn't stay with them, so we got in contact with Nisa Homes who took me in. They didn't just help me, but also helped my brother and I find a place together, helped him find a job and supported me in finishing school. It's been a difficult journey, but they have helped me realize that it wasn't my fault. I got the counselling I needed and now I'm finally learning to love myself!

My journey was made possible because someone chose to believe me, be by my side. Your gift to Nisa Foundation supports other girls like me find the courage to share their truth, break free from the shadows of abuse.
In Canada, 58% of sexual assault victims aged 12-17 are harmed by friends or acquaintances3
